Today, I’m taking a slight detour to share my biggest pet peeve with writers – especially writers who want to make a good living from their work.

Copy.

Yes. I want to talk about the words, the sentences and the paragraphs that YOU want to trade for dollars – usually hard-earned dollars.

This past week, numerous pieces of writing crossed my desk with egregious grammatical or spelling errors that should have been avoided. I know that every writer who sent work to me this week cares about their work. But frankly, it didn’t look that way.

Just like meeting someone for the first time, your writing makes an impression. Error-free writing says that you care. Sloppy mistakes say that you do not.

I’m not talking about the odd typo – while that ticks all of us off, it will happen, even to the best of us. I’m talking about sentences that trail off mid-stream, extra words from a poor cut and paste, multiple spelling errors – you get the picture.

You work hard to find a client, but mistakes will not only distract them when they read your copy; that hard-earned client will begin to lose trust in the value you can add to their business.
