A pilot program for budding writers I tentatively tried out in the summer of 2014 changed my life. Literally.
My Pit-Bull Grip of Fear
I’m a fifty year old stay at home mother, venturing out to work again now that my two sons are teenagers. But not just any venture – a storytelling/creative writing/freelance/ improv business I dreamed about but didn’t know how to start. Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees! The intimidating part wasn’t the business idea – my fear settled on exactly how to get started and there I dropped anchor, quite unable to move. And by fear, I’m talking a pit-bull grip that formed itself into a nasty little voice, whining condescendingly, “Really? Writing and acting! At your age? Just get a job.” Where DO those critical little bastards come from?
Luckily I heard about and readily signed up for Gail Mercer MacKay’s pilot program called “Freelance Writing Freedom. A Practical New Approach to a 6-Figure Income”. “Six?” said the bastard “Get real.”
Coaching, Mentoring, Inspiration
For the next nine weeks I contributed online, actively participated in the conference calls and did my homework along with twelve other unsure but equally ambitious men and women who were venturing forth on a writing career. Goals, market trends, differentiators, gap analysis, elevator pitch and lead generation strategies brought my business and my fears into focus. The labyrinth of social media management isn’t nearly as complicated as I thought and that slow and steady climb of followers is authentic and real, thanks to Gail’s patient coaching and advice.
What started out as a tentative toe dip in cool waters turned into a cannon ball splash of fun, focused marketing plan, lead generation and profit. I am busy, leveraging solid feedback for both writing jobs and corporate team building improv sessions. I now deliver improv training in business, health and education sectors. I write blogs for corporate clients who want to educate their audience. One hospital has hired me to develop a medical paper. I share the art of storytelling in a way that is profound and profitable.
A Dime a Dozen
Business plans are a dime a dozen. Gail’s differentiating factor focused on her ability to help me hear and establish my authentic voice, and then strengthen and target that into a plan of growth. The path through the trees is taken piecemeal and the management of social media, twitter accounts and LinkedIn is slow and steady. Gail’s program is concise yet thorough, easy to follow but powerfully impactful. Once established, my voice gains volume, confidence and the ability to silence the nasty little bastard. He’s backed right down.
